Le microcode update fait tellement chier plein de machine, que Microsoft a pris la décision de désactiver les mitigation pour spectre d'ici le temps qu'Intel arrge ses shits ...
Microsoft has issued on Saturday an emergency out-of-band Windows update that disables patches for the Spectre Variant 2 bug (CVE-2017-5715).
The update —KB4078130— targets Windows 7 (SP1), Windows 8.1, all versions of Windows 10, and all supported Windows Server distributions.Pour ceux qui ont pas encore flasher leur BIOS, vous avez riuen a faire pour l'instant.Microsoft reacts to Intel statement
The company said it decided to disable mitigations for the Spectre Variant 2 bug after Intel publicly admitted that the microcode updates it developed for this bug caused "higher than expected reboots and other unpredictable system behavior" that led to "data loss or corruption."
As a response, Microsoft decided to disable Spectre Variant 2 mitigations until Intel develops a more stable fix.
In cases where these updates can't be rolled out to affected computers right away, Microsoft is also providing instructions on how to manually disable the Spectre Variant 2 mitigations via registry keys. Separate instructions are available for Windows desktop and server users.
Si vous aviez flasher votre bios, assurer vous de mettre ajour Windows et que la KB4078130 soit bien installer pour vous éviter des reboot inutile ...

Sur reddit.I was reading up the whitepapers that Intel and AMD released. The situation is quite complex. Microsoft is using a different mitigation for Spectre than Linux. Linux uses retpoline, which requires applications to be recompiled. Microsoft use a mitagation that requires new instructions (IBPB, IBRS and STIBP) - and hence needs a microcode update, because these instructions did not exist previously. However, it requires no recompile (that's why they don't use Retpoline). AMD have not yet released their microcode yet. They say it's only available for newer processors, but they don't say explicitly which ones. Retpoline requires no micocode update for AMD CPUs, but strangely it does for Intel CPUs. Also, it performs faster than Microsoft's patch.
